First Look| L'oreal Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara

I purchased my L'oreal Voluminous Miss Manga mascara (around $7 retail) just to see if I would be on Team Yay or Nay. Afterall, reviews for this new release has been a straight divide between hit or miss.

The yay'ers say that it's volumizing and lengthening, flake and smudge-proof, and does give a doll-eyed effect to the lashes. Sounds like a dream come true if you ask me.But then you hear the naysayers who claim that the formula is too wet, the brush is too bendy (borderline floppy), the overall look is clumpy and spidery, and just no.

Once again, mascara is such a personal preference that it all comes down to you taking the risk to try it out.

For me, I would say that this mascara is a great workhorse but needs a week to dry out to reach its full potential.

  • It's really flake-free and doesn't irritate my contacts like many other mascaras from the drugstore that promise to lengthen through fibers.
  •  Speaking of length, this mascara delivers more length in one coat than my Lancome Definicils or even YSL Babydoll Faux Cils...
  • While giving me volume. Granted, it's not plush and plumped lashes and...
  • The overall effect is a wide eyed, spidery, spiky-lashed look.
  • The formula is really wet and can be layered multiple times. If you use the wand smartly, you can really reach into every corner and especially coat the tips to lengthen some more.
  • It holds a curl well and doesn't smudge onto my lower lids halfway through the day.
  • Lastly, the wand is not as hard to work with as expected. It has some give so that you can really press the pigment onto your lashes, but not so much that it's flopping everywhere and getting product onto your lids.
However, big emphasis on the spidery lash look! You will not be a fan of this mascara no matter how much definition it gives to your lashes. Think of the mascara as making your lashes look thicker at the base and then converging into sharp points at the tips.

If you are feeling adventurous, this layers very well over other mascaras and looks great if your base coat doesn't deliver on volume but gives definition.

I think those with sparse and short lashes who appreciate any help they can get will really find that this does the job excellently, while those already blessed with normal lashes will absolutely hate how this mascara looks.

I found Miss Manga to be a great placeholder/replacement for my YSL Babydoll Faux Cils, and I'll probably be repurchasing!
