Review| Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks in Vampira and Lolita

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks in Vampira and Lolita ($19 each) are ultra pigmented, comfortable to wear, and a great alternative to Lime Crime Velvetines (without owner scandals!) in many other colors from nudes, pinks, and reds.

I chose Vampira, because one can never have enough vampy liquid lipsticks. Seriously! For deep and scary lips a liquid lipstick is my preferred formula. It can easily sit on top of a lip liner, won't budge outside your lip lines, and stay put for hours even after meals. To my surprise, Vampira can easily be worn in one thin coat as a gorgeous jewel toned berry shade. Or, you can build it up to a deep, almost blackened, red shade.

Lolita, on the other hand, is a very unique color in my stash. It looks different to many friends. One friend called it "doo doo brown." Another said it's a classy and muted deep lavender to her eyes. To me, I see a deep pinky-taupe color. In any case, it's very brown leaning mauve on my lips and is definitely a throwback 90s color that's perfectly trendy for this fall.

Below I have swatched them next to several other liquid lipstick formulations in different lighting for comparison. Swatches are one swipe each on bare skin. From left to right:  Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Icon, Sephora Luster Matte Long Wearing Lip Color in Petal, KVD Lolita, KVD Vampira, Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Dark Berry, Lime Crime Velvetine in Wicked.

No surprise: these lipsticks all use doe-foot wands for a precise application.

Here are the swatches in natural lighting (overcast) above and natural indoor lighting below.

I have a few gripes with the formula. They are not as long lasting as Lime Crime Velvetines and will need reapplication after that greasy meal. However, they are very staining and long-wearing without making my lips peel and flake. If you restrain from oily or greasy food (new diet lipstick craze?) the color will not migrate from your lips.

They are also tricky to layer on top of a balm. If you use a balm that is too thick, these will bleed outside of your lip lines. If you don't use a balm, you risk your lips feeling tight and uncomfortable for the entire day. Solution? Use a Chapstick or Nivea balm that's not too thick rather than something as hardcore as Lanolin or Aquaphor. You can then put a lip liner on top of the balm and then apply the liquid lipstick for maximum precision and coverage.

Overall, I really enjoy them for what they are and don't expect iron strength wear throughout the day. Liquid lipsticks take a lot of patience to perfect, but you can get a crisp line and hours of wear with some concentration and practice. For these lipsticks, I would recommend applying in very thin layers (building up to 3 if needed) for the longest wear time possible. In thin layers, I've seen both colors last through an entire work day with one reapplication.
